The Brazilian driver crashed at the end of the qualifying session and was forbidden to race by the doctors

This weekend the streets of Monte Carlo, in the Principality of Monaco, host the fourth round of the F2 World Championship. Sérgio Sette Câmara (YOUSE | Banco BMG | MRV | CCR | CEMIG | GASMIG | Usiminas), the only Brazilian in the competition, suffered a strong crash in the qualifying session and, after medical evaluation, was prohibited from participating in races for the seventh and eighth stages of the Championship.

Coming from a weekend full of problems in the GP of Spain two weeks ago, Sergio came very excited to Monte Carlo. Confident in the good work of the Carlin team and also in his dedicated preparation in the simulators, the Brazilian knew, exactly, what his great potential for this race was.

With a different schedule from the other stages of the year, the first track activities were held on Thursday. In the free practice, which lasted 40 minutes, Sette already made it clear that he had a good equipment to register the fifth-best mark, with the time of 1m22s553.

Aware that there were features to be improved on the car, driver and team worked hard to get details on the equipment and, confident, Sergio went for the qualifiers. With the first set of tyres, the young man from Belo Horizonte managed to establish the mark of 1m21s901, time that would bring him to the fourth position in the general grid. After a quick pit stop and tyre change, Sette returned to the track in order to improve two-tenths of his time. If he did, it would give him the pole position. Very concentrated, just after opening the fast lap, at the entrance of corner one (Sainte Devote), the car lost traction and crashed against the protective barrier of the track. The crash was strong and Sergio, after getting out of the car, was taken to the Medical Center with severe pain in his right hand.

The driver had several imaging tests and, this morning, was evaluated by the doctors of the International Federation of Automobile – FIA. Due to the serious dislocation in the right wrist, at first, the driver was not given permission to participate in this Friday’s race. However, after a second analysis, the health professionals thought it was not appropriate for him to participate in the race this Saturday (26) either.

Just like this, Sérgio Sette left the city of Monte Carlo and is on his way to Barcelona, where he has been living for four years, where he will continue his recovery. The fifth round of the F2 World Championship will take place between 22 and 24 June in Paul Ricard, France.

“Yesterday during the qualifying session, when I was taking the car to the limit to try for the pole, I had an accident on the last lap. I had an injury in my right hand and the FIA doctors evaluated it and decided I was not allowed to participate in the races this weekend. I’m extremely upset! But, that will not put me down. I’m going to focus 100% on my recovery for the next race at Paul Ricard in a month. I thank all my sponsors and the hundreds of messages of support I have received since yesterday … Very grateful to all of you, “explained the driver.
