The pilot will be on the grid in the last step before F1 with the Dutch team MP Motorsport
When the Brazilian motorsport is experiencing the fear of having no representative in the next season of Formula-1, it is announced on Thursday, the 24th, the name of the pilot from Minas Gerais, Sérgio Sette Câmara (Petrobras | CEMIG | Mercantil do Brasil) as the new member of MP Motorsport team for the GP2 Series in 2017.
Known for his talent and great boldness in the tracks, the 18-years old pilot emerges as the main bet for renewal of Brazilian motorsport. Coming from two seasons in the European F3 Championship, where knowingly he did not have the best car of the competition, the pilot stood out a lot and even with little experience accumulated good results and great mileage, facts that qualify him to win a seat in the disputed grid of the GP2 Series.
GP2 Series is for a few years the last step in the career of a pilot who intends to get to the F-1. Their cars, that reach speeds of up to 330 km/h, are very close to the machines that currently compete in the main category of Motorsport. The Championship is held by FOM-Formula One Management, the company promoter of the F-1 World Championship. The races of this competition happen always during the same events of F-1 and are held in preliminary form to the huge audience in motorsport venues. As well as in this year, the 2017 season shall have 11 double rounds, all with live broadcast in Brazil by Sportv. Not yet released officially, the 2017 Championships should pass by Barcelona (Spain), Monte Carlo (Monaco), Baku (Azerbaijan), Spielberg (Austria), Silverstone (England), Budapest (Hungary), Hockenheim (Germany), Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), Monza (Italy), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates).
After the great work done in F3, especially last weekend when he finished in third in the 63rd Grand Prix of Macau, Sette Câmara was invited by the Dutch team MP Motorsport to join its team for next year. The MP Motorsport made its debut in GP2 in 2013 and, in these four years it has already assisted in the development of a number of pilots to reach F-1. Its engineers, all renowned in motorsports world, have worked with renowe names in the tracks, such as Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Räikkönen, Will Stevens, Paul Di Resta, Oliver Jarvis, Oliver Rowland, among others.
Sander Dorsman, owner of MP Motorsport, is excited with the arrival of the Brazilian pilot. “Sergio is a young pilot of great talent. He made good performances in the season of F3 and the podium in challenging street circuit of the Macau Grand Prix last weekend, he was sensational. Incredibly fast, he is certainly one of the best candidates to enter the GP2 next year. We, here in MP Motorsport, are delighted to make this announcement now, especially since we will have him with us in the practice sessions in Abu Dahbi, next week. So, we will have the chance to prepare him as best as possible for the 2017 season”.
On te other hand, the Brazilian pilot has to celebrate. “I am extremely happy to announce that next year I will be competing in the GP2 season. It is a very competitive category with sensational cars. The teams are very professional, and all pilots, very fast and talented. It is a big step in relation to the F3 on a platform where I can learn a lot. I can’t wait to sit in the car and start to push. In addition to acquiring knowledge I believe I can show some kind of result this year. My first contact with the car will be next week in Abu Dhabi, in the post-season tests. The MP Motorsport has a truly great team, racing for many years and I believe that this whole experience will be able to assist me in the quest for mileage and the results I expect. I am grateful to Mr. Sander Dorman the opportunity to compete with them and I hope soon I can get closer to my trajectory towards F-1 “, commented the Brazilian pilot.
